Aug 2019 - contact and learning lateral movements
This month we have some more footage of Charlotte Culley and Summer from July, with Summer in the snaffle in which she was still very inconsistent in contact. She is a very opinionated mare, far from easy, so it is all about trying to outwit her, and not confront her!
In the video of her in August, she is in the pelham again and although yes, she still drops behind the vertical of her own accord, mainly because she tries to grab hold of the bit cheeks. We had just the same years ago with Sudi and Rei, but as they mature they gradually forget about playing with the bit and settle. Her trot is beautifully active and regular in rhythm, and she is not fighting the contact when she is taking it, just messing with the cheeks every so often so drops the contact when doing so. This is work in progress and I think it will show clearly in the two videos that progress is indeed being made!
There are two videos of new volunteer student, Eliška Staňková, in her second lesson on arrival and then learning the lateral movements in walk, in the second video. Eliska is here for 2 months, so I hope we can show a further improvement next month. She is a very good little rider overall, but had a strong tendency to collapse the left hip, was a bit of a 'caterpillar' in sitting trot, with wriggly pelvis, and has a tendency, as with nearly everyone who comes here, to use the leg up and backwards, so we are working on that.
