Apr 2019 - schooling a "hot" horse and new project series
The videos this month of Caroline and Figgy, our latest project horse series, show how we would work with an older horse through the use of French Classical Equitation.
Also this month is 9 yr old ex showjumper, KWPN mare Echo, a very sweet but hot and sensitive mare, who needs to work more along the German Scales of Training, as she has to learn that the riders legs do not mean 'run away' but 'step under'. She also needs to relax her topline through relaxation of the jaw, which in turn relaxes the poll and then the all-important underneck, which if hard, tense and bulging means that she could not lift her back to carry the rider. At this stage, she does come behind the vertical although it is clear that Tallulah does not pull her there. When Echo tries to shoot off, Tallulah merely tenses her fingers to block the surge, immediately relaxing the fingers when Echo relaxes her jaw. If she were able to ride her for a few days in a row, the 'surges' forward would become less and less and Echo would start to relax into her own natural rhythm, which has a calming effect on such horses.
